English Garden, The. Part 6: Perfectly Dazzling (1840-1914)
- Synopsis
- With the variety and growth of suburban gardens, a gardener could create his own make-believe world, and with Chinese, Egyptian, rhododendron and rock gardens, and this is what he did. The surrounding countryside consisted of banks and belts of trees - the garden became enclosed simply to prevent others from seeing it. There are shots of the gardens at Biddulf (including an exotic Egptian court) and another garden complete with rockery and gnomes to which the owner wrote poems. There was an increasing interest in botany and by 1840 Kew Gardens had been established. The ostentatious Victorian garden developed during this period and there are shots of Queen Victoria’s seaside retreat at Osborne. Also shows cottage gardens which had also developed during the period.
