English Garden, The. Part 5: The Picturesque Paradise (1785-1840)
- Synopsis
- After the death of Capability Brown in 1783, Humphrey Repton became recognised as his natural successor and used visible terraces and flowers to decorate the landscape. However, both Brown and Repton were criticised for not being dramatic enough. The French Revolution had its effect and during this period gardens became more romantic and fantastical. Designers tried to improve on nature with caverns cut out of solid rock and buildings of exotic design. The population in Britain increased with the coming of the industrial revolution and this led to the development of the suburban garden by John Claudius Lowden. Ends with the patent for the lawnmower in 1830, with Sir John Gielgud demonstrating one of the early models.
