English Garden, The. Part 3: A Temple in the Grove (1725-1755)
- Synopsis
- The invention of the sunken fence or ‘ha-ha’ set designers free to harmonise the surrounding countryside with the garden, while loosening up the regularity of previous gardens. Locations include a 12-acre kitchen garden at Castle Howard, the castle grounds of the Temple of the Winds at Stowe in Buckinghamshire, Mount Edgecombe in Cornwall, and Stourhead in Wiltshire. There are also shots of the valley garden created by Henry Hoare which inspired paintings by Constable and Turner.
