Emerging Viruses

Synopsis
Nobel Prizewinner Joshua Lederberg is among those who believe that we have grown too complacent about infectious diseases since the development of antibiotics and the control of diseases such as cholera and tuberculosis. New, lethal viruses have emerged, causing diseases such as Marburg disease in Germany, Lassa in Sierra Leona and Rift Valley fever in Egypt, to be followed by HIV in 1981. There is a hope that there is a common thread among these outbreaks and it will be possible to understand the circumstances under which a virus will spread in order to prevent the next epidemic.
