Dynamic Ropes

Synopsis
Examines service loading conditions to which ropes and equipment are subjected in marine applications. Measurements have been made, from instruments installed on tug boats, of the towing and docking of ships. Looks briefly at similar work on ships’ mooring ropes. The data collected is used to design experiments for a new method of testing ropes dynamically on a unique machine, designed and built by the National Engineering Laboratory, which incorporates such features as air bearings and linear induction motors.*
