Dutch Royal Library Disc, The

Synopsis
Contains 7000 illustrations from manuscripts and printed books from the early Middle ages to th 16th century. There are 2 kinds of pictures: 1) handpainted miniatures, used as decorations and/or illustrations of handwritten books. Approximately 4000 miniatures, reproduced in colour, have been selected from 90 manuscripts and are mostly of French or Low Countries origin; 2) about 3000 woodcuts from incunabula printed in the Low Countries. Recorded in black and white, they comprise 75% of the total of Dutch woodcuts of the Dutch Royal Library Collection and therefore give a good insight into the illustrations in early editions of printed books in the Netherlands.
