Dismantling the Bomb

Synopsis
Examines the process involved in dismantling bombs. It is easy to dismantle bomb cases, but the plutonium pits cannot be simply destroyed. Shows PANTEX in Texas where bombs are dismantled and plutonium pits are stored in racks in 50-year-old bunkers above ground, while scientists and politicians decide what to do with them. In Russia plutonium is available for sale on the open market and seems to have come from civilian reactors. As more plutonium is made each day as a consequence of running a reactor, the programme looks at the history of nuclear weapons and the proposed methods for trying to dispose of plutonium safely.
