Disease Called Leprosy, A

Synopsis
An introduction to leprosy and the work being done in India to help those afflicted and to seek a cure. Research in Delhi has shown that in lepers there is a deficiency either in lymphocytes or in the signal which mobilises the macrophages into action. In Kumbakonam Hospital reconstructive surgery is regarded as important to correct deformities. The social stigma of leprosy is often more painful that the deformity, so an assessment of each patient is made to discover which hand movements would be of most value in allowing the sufferer to resume their place in the community. The drug dapsone is discussed.
