Discovery of Handicap, The

Synopsis
Aims to show parental feelings at the time handicap is diagnosed and the skills involved in counselling parents at such a time. The presenter (a lecturer in social work and himself the parent of a mentally handicapped child) role-plays a social worker interviewing a couple whose child has recently been diagnosed as having Down’s Syndrome. The interview is role-played twice, the first aiming to show a less satisfactory way for the social worker to conduct the interview than the second. The parents’ roles are role-playing themselves after the birth of their first child some eight years previously. Ends with a brief discussion about the role-play between the presenter and the couple.
