Alcoholism: The Gp’s Role

Synopsis
Mr Grant, Educational Director of the Alcohol Education Centre, and Dr Acres, a member of the Advisory Committee on Alcoholism to the DHSS, discuss with Dr Grob the role of the GP in the diagnosis and management of alcoholism. The GP is known to be the favoured initial contact for those with drinking problems, yet most alcoholics are not diagnosed by GPs. The presenters consider the reasons for this anomaly, and discuss GP training, attitudes to the alcoholic, problems of diagnosis and management, and patient education.
