Diffraction in Action

Synopsis
Concerned with applications of diffraction in practical physical examples. Shows how to set up the student’s home kit laser in a form suitable for diffraction experiments. Interpretation of the diffractometer itself, developed by Charles Taylor, who uses the instrument to show some simple patterns. Discuses how X-ray patterns originate at the atomic level. Emphasises the wave lengths involved and compares these with the much longer waves used by Professor Taylor in the laser experiment. Shows how the diffractometer can be used to interpret these patterns for an organic chemical hexa-methyl benzene and for a man-made fibre. Explains how the diffraction patterns for asbestos fibres can be used to analyse the proportion of a dangerous component in a suspension of two types.

Notes
NB. As of May 2016 Open University Worldwide are no longer distributing DVDs. They have posted this message on their website: ‘Unfortunately Open University Worldwide Limited has decided that product sales are no longer viable given the reduced funding to Higher Education institutions and diminishing demand for the products we have traditionally stocked. At present the Open University Students Association (OUSA) will continue to sell the "Good Study Guide", and we are in discussion with other possible distributors to continue to make The Open University’s products available for purchase. As soon as we have any information on other channels of distribution we will update this notice’. Some products are still available via second hand dealers on Amazon.co.uk
