Developing Images
- Synopsis
- Explores the connection between media portrayal of Third World issues and many people’s view of blacks and Asians as racial inferiors. Argues that pictures (photographs and film) portray Third World societies as places of inevitable hopelessness. Newsreader Trevor McDonald comments on similar pictures in news programmes. The video shows that a many techniques exist whereby the same images can be given entirely different meanings depending on the wishes of the producer. Students are invited to write their own soundtrack for a film sequence showing life in a Tanzanian coffee plantation, then insert more film for extra effect.
