Designing a Clinical Trial
- Synopsis
- Follows the general principles applicable to the design and running of a clinical trial from the inception of one particular trial to the beginning of its implementation. The trial involves a group of surgeons who wish to assess alternative ways of preventing bleeding after tonsillectomy. They explore the current research literature, discuss the proposed trial and begin to plan the trial with a group of clinical and statistical colleagues. The Ethical Committee deliberates, the 12-month trial starts, and patients are asked to give their consent. Theatre operations and the opening of randomisation envelopes are featured, together with post-operative assessments. The first results of the trial begin to enter the database.
