Dervishes of Kurdistan, The
- Synopsis
- About a community of Kurds resident in Iran on the border with Iraq, man of whom are refugees from Kurdish areas of Iraq. The distinguishing feature of this particular community is that its members are Qadiri Dervishes - followers of an unusual Islamic mystical cult. The religious leader Sheikh Hossein explains: ‘The best Muslim is he who performs the most zikrs - Dervish ceremonies. The Dervish must have total faith in God - if he sets himself alight he will not be burned, if he cuts himself into pieces he will not die.' The film explores the extraordinary manifestations of Qadiri Dervish religious faith both in religious ceremonies and in everyday life.
