- Synopsis
- Profiles French artist Edgar Degas and presents many examples of his work including paintings, sculpture, drawings and photographs. Uses excerpts from his writings, letters and sonnets to explore the development of his style and discusses the impact of his travels to Italy and Now Orleans. Examines his involvement with the French impressionist movement. Analyses his thematic treatment of horse races, ballet dancers, café singers, laundresses, bathers and prostitutes. Produced in conjunction with the 1988 retrospective at the Grand Palais in Paris, the National Gallery in Ottawa and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
