Synopsis

Declan Kiberd, Professor of Anglo-Irish Literature and Drama at University College Dublin, examines the language and theme of J M Synge’s greatest play, ‘The Playboy of the Western World’. Synge evolved a unique style in his plays; he wanted to combine the heightened beauty of the Decadents’ language with the realism of Ibsen and Zola.
