Debe’s Tantrum

Synopsis
Five-year-old Debe refuses to let his mother, Di!ai, go gathering without him. It will be a hot, exhausting day and Di!ai would prefer to leave Debe with his half-sister, N!ai. Debe has been looking forward to going out and strongly resists being left. His mother gives in and struggles off with her son on her back. !Kung parents have little authority over their children who become independent at an earlier age than Western children. Parents rarely punish their children. They believe punishment to be ineffective and a source of public conflict. Note: the material for the film was shot in the 1950s.
