Day the Earth Melted, The

Synopsis
A volcanic catastrophe 66 million years ago on the west coast of present-day India, thousands of times bigger than anything mankind has ever witnessed, created the spectacular landscape seen there today. The effects were felt around the globe and may have driven the dinosaurs to extinction. Discusses such outbursts of volcanic activity on earth and describes research which has led to a new theory explaining the origins of the earth’s crust. Professor Dan McKenzie, the Cambridge geologist who first formulated the theory of plate tectonics, bases this new unifying ‘melt theory’ on a detailed understanding of what happens to the crystalline structure of rocks at high pressure.
