Dame Henrietta’s Dream
- Synopsis
- Hampstead Garden Suburb in north London was founded in 1907 by Victorian philanthropist Dame Henrietta Bennett, who dreamed of rescuing people from squalid housing in London’s East End and installing them in a carefully planned estate for all classes to live together. Looks at life in the now almost entirely middle-class suburb through the eyes of some of its residents. Highlights the controversy surrounding the proposal to construct an ‘eruv’, an artificial boundary of benefit to the Orthodox Jewish community.
