AIDS: Quest for a Cure
- Synopsis
- By the end of the century 15-20 million people will be infected by HIV. Unless scientists find a cure, all these people will die from AIDS. British scientists have now created a compound that stops the AIDS virus growing without killing human cells. Butyl-DNJ, resulting from advances in glycobiology, the science of sugars, has been developed by Professor Raymond Dwek of Oxford University, Dr Linda Fellows, a plant biologist at Kew Gardens, and Dr Abraham Karpas, a leading virologist. But it is too early to say whether the drug will be efective.
