- Cryptography, or code-making, is at the centre of a battle between governments, scientists and civil rights groups. Governments consider codes used by companies, political groups and criminals as a threat to society and security. Cryptographer PhilZimmerman is under FBI investigation being used to block government wire taps. Burma guerrillas and British bankers in Rangoon are using PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) encryption. Examines the British government’s potential development of an electronic surveillance system which would allow them to hold ‘spare keys’ to encryption systems and to eavesdrop on all digital communications.
