Cruelty or Conservation

Synopsis
The English countryside may look natural but it has largely been man-made, partly for agriculture and partly for pleasure. Opinion polls say that a majority of people oppose hunting and shooting, but supporters say that field sports are a force for good in holding back the ravages of intensive farming. If field sports are banned, what incentive will a landowner have to preserve a corner of a field for a fox covert or a wood as a pheasant roost? The Heythrop Hunt in the Cotswolds explain how they help maintain and replant hedges, coppices and woodland and help manage and purchase these areas for wildlife.
