Critical Decisions in Mental Health

Synopsis
In six scenes, drawn from real-life experiences, a social worker comes into contact with a person who is showing some signs of mental illness: a young man who shows suicidal tendencies; a middle-aged woman showing signs of schizophrenic illness; a young woman apparently in a manic state; a middle-aged woman apparently in a paranoid state; a middle-aged woman in a confused state; and an elderly woman apparently suffering from senile dementia. In each case the social worker must intervene and take a decision about the course of action. Does the situation call for compulsory admission or is there an alternative course of action? How far should the GP be involved? What are the legal procedures that must be followed? Each scene presents a different set of problems and suggests courses of action. Examples of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ intervention are shown.
