Synopsis

Looks at Lanchester’s famous ‘square law’ used to predict the outcome of a battle from knowing the firepower of each unit and the number of units. Uses a computer simulation of a battle to demonstrate the range of outcomes to be expected according to a Poisson process. Analyses Nelson’s tactics at the Battle of Trafalgar.
