Explains the process of surveying, designed to guide students in all subject areas who are required to use surveying techniques in research. Follows a market research company as it conducts a survey about vehicle safety issues. Covers: clarifying objectives (including testing a hypothesis), qualitative and quantitative research, types of survey methods (face-to-face, telephone, self-completion), selecting a sample and specifying sample characteristics, using non-probability samples (convenience, volunteer, judgemental and quota) and probability samples (random and stratified random samples); calculating error margins, designing and piloting a questionnaire (using closed and scale questions, avoiding bias), analysis, presentation (using charts and tables), assessment of results.
