Commensalism of ‘Nereis Fucata’ (Polychaeta)

Synopsis
The marine annelid ‘Nereis fucata’ lives in snail shells inhabited by hermit crabs (here ‘Pagurus bernardus’). There have been no morphological adaptations. The important behavioural elements (i.e. entering the shell, obtaining food, fighting, locomotion and irrigation) are all present in free-living related species. Also shows the biotope, population density, positive seismotaxis, thigmotaxis, function of mucus secretion, swarming of the mature animals.
