Synopsis
Series using reconstructions, archive footage and documentary evidence to focus on the crises of the Cold War from 1945 tot he late 1980s, emphasising the Soviet perspective throughout. In five parts: 1) Berlin 1945-48: memoirs of Gregory Kilmov with an insight into the early Cold War years; 2) Hungary 1956: crushing the 1956 Hungarian uprising; 3) U2 and the Arms Race 1956-60: story of Gary Powers, the U-2 spy plane pilot shot down over Soviet airspace in 1960; 4) The Cuban Missile Crisis 1962: the stand-off between Kennedy and Khrushchev over Cuba; 5) ‘Evil Empire’ 1980s: events of the 1980s.
