Cochlear Nerve, The

Synopsis
Shows how recordings can be made of the nerve impulse activity in single fibres of the cochlear nerve, and demonstrates some of the basic physiological properties of this level of a sensory nervous system. Shows the procedure for the physiological preparation of the guinea pig, the preparation of the ear and its acoustical calibration, the exposure of the cochlear nerve through a craniotomy, and the insertion of the microelectrode, and the activity of a single fibre in response to clicks and simple tonal stimuli. The threshold, latency and frequency response (tuning curve) characteristics are demonstrated by oscilloscope recording with visual and sound track representation of the sound stimuli.
