Affine Geometry
- Synopsis
- Introduces the idea of affine geometry and looks at different aspects of it use. In three sections: 1: Introduces two theorems about ellipses - the midpoint theorem and the conjugate diameters theorem. Shows how they are straightforward to prove when the ellipse is a circle and goes on to show how they can be proved in the general case by transforming an ellipse into a circle. 2: Investigates a transformation known as parallel projection, which formalises the ideas of shadows cast by sunlight and shows how it has the properties needed to map circles into ellipses. 3: Shows how parallel projection is but one of a new class of transormations called affine transformations. Looks at the algebra of affine transformations and shows how any such can be realised as a series of parallel projections.

- NB. As of May 2016 Open University Worldwide are no longer distributing DVDs. They have posted this message on their website: ‘Unfortunately Open University Worldwide Limited has decided that product sales are no longer viable given the reduced funding to Higher Education institutions and diminishing demand for the products we have traditionally stocked. At present the Open University Students Association (OUSA) will continue to sell the "Good Study Guide", and we are in discussion with other possible distributors to continue to make The Open University’s products available for purchase. As soon as we have any information on other channels of distribution we will update this notice’. Some products are still available via second hand dealers on Amazon.co.uk
