Aerodynamic Generation of Sound
- Synopsis
- Describes the mechanism of sound generation by turbulence resulting from an instability of steady flow. Elementary source models are illustrated and their fields visualised on a ripple tank. Quadrupoles are discussed and the fundamentals of jet noise generation illustrated in model jet experiments and ripple-tanks simulation. Sound and pseudo-sound are contrasted and experiments show how pseudo-sound energy can be scattered as sound by discrete inhomogenities, such as bubbles in water. The parameter representing source size on a wavelength scale - the compactness ratio. How supersonic flow phenomena can often be attributed to a local break-down of the compactness condition.
