Churchill 1

Synopsis
Television series in which historian Martin Gilbert presents a biography of Winston Churchill. In four parts: 1) Renegade and Turncoat: Churchill’s early life and political career up to 1940, when he became Prime Minister; 2) To Conquer or to Die: how and why Churchill became the symbol of Britain’s struggle for survival through the crises of Dunkirk, the Battle of Britain and the Blitz, until the first great victory at Alamein turned the tide; 3) Beginning of the End: the events of the war between 1943 and 1945, including Churchill’s plan for a post-war division of Europe with the Soviets. By the time of the Yalta treaty Britain was becoming increasing powerless; 4) Never Despair: the end of the war and surprise election defeat in 1945. Churchill used his period in opposition to warn of the Soviet threat. When again Prime Minister in 1951, he failed to call a summit to ensure world peace, eventually resigned following a stroke, and died in 1965.
