Chole Island: Circumcision

Synopsis
Male circumcision is the centre of a ritual which marks a stage in the male life cycle. Concerns an Islamic group in Tanzania and shows a part of the typical pattern of these rites - separation from the old, a marginal period of becoming an adult (and convalescence) and a ritual of re-integration into the community in a new status. The final songs accompanying the ritual emphasise that the boys are now socially accepted as men, even though the ritual has been performed well before biological puberty.
