China: Ballet

Synopsis
The Peking ballet was turned into a ‘model’ company by Chiang Ching during the time of Mao Tse-Tung’s leadership. This film describes what became of the company during that time. It gives a sense of the dynamics of the campaign during the Cultural Revolution and of how the acute tensions of that time continue to affect the troupe. There is an evident wish to rejoin the outside world and catch up artistically. The commentary is left largely to the Chinese.
