Child’s Guide to Languages, A
- Synopsis
- Looks at different ways of teaching a foreign language and contrasts this with the way babies and young children pick up their native language easily. Without formal teaching they acquire words and grammar. Canadian French immersion schools are covered in detail. Professor Stephen Krashen of the University of South Carolina Department of Linguistics, lectures about three elements he sees as essential for children to pick up their native language - a stress-free environment, the right to remain silent. and hearing comprehensible language spoken continuously. A radical change in attitude and approch, especially in schools, in needed for more widespread language learning by children.
