Chekhov in Performance in Russia and Soviet Russia
- Synopsis
- A chronological survey of Chekhov in performance in the Russian theatre from the first production of ‘The Seagull’ at the Imperial Alexandrinsky Theatre in 1896, the premieres at the Moscow Arts Theatre, up to and including the iconoclastic productions of modern Soviet directors such as Heifitz, Efros and Toustonogov. The changing and developing production concepts consistently question the nature of Chekhov’s ‘realism’ in the theatre.
