Chardin and the Still Life

Synopsis
Chardin became known as the master of the still life in 18th-century France. This film discusses the hierarchy of genres in the 18th century, among which the still life was the lowest category. Shows examples of paintings by earlier French and Dutch still-life painters who influenced Chardin. Discusses Chardin’s own methods - his subtle use of light, shade and colour and his loose application of paint to create vivid textures. Contrasts the quiet sentiments of Chardin’s paintings with the highly emotional style coming into fashion in the late 18th century. Includes quotations from the salons of Diderot, who was one of the first critics to admire Chardin.

At present the Open University Students Association (OUSA) will continue to sell the "Good Study Guide", and we are in discussion with other possible distributors to continue to make The Open University’s products available for purchase. As soon as we have any information on other channels of distribution we will update this notice’. Some products are still available via second hand dealers on Amazon.co.uk
