Changes in Rural Society: Piedmont and Sicily

Synopsis
Land use maps in the Italian state archives in Turin archives are used to research social and economic conditions in the regions of Piedmont - the hilly Langhe with sparse mixed farming, the flat Po valley, and the Vercellesi with large rice farms. By contrast, Sicily hasfew archives in which to trace pre-unification conditions. After unification, the steady economic decline and rising population in rural Sicily contributed to the change in the social hierarchy, which itself led to civil unrest and emigration. In Piedmont, the Langhe transformed itself into a specialist wine growing area and prospered, whereas the wealthy landowners of the Vercellesi continued to exploit large numbers of desperate and deprived landless workers in the rice fields.

Notes
NB. As of May 2016 Open University Worldwide are no longer distributing DVDs. They have posted this message on their website: ‘Unfortunately Open University Worldwide Limited has decided that product sales are no longer viable given the reduced funding to Higher Education institutions and diminishing demand for the products we have traditionally stocked. At present the Open University Students Association (OUSA) will continue to sell the "Good Study Guide", and we are in discussion with other possible distributors to continue to make The Open University’s products available for purchase. As soon as we have any information on other channels of distribution we will update this notice’. Some products are still available via second hand dealers on Amazon.co.uk
