Century Speaks, The

Synopsis
In July 1998, producers at 40 local and regional BBC radio stations began interviewing 6,000 people from all backgrounds, ranging in age from 4 to 107. The aim was to capture the experience of the last century through the voices of ordinary people. 640 half-hour programmes were broadcast on local radio stations across the UK, and the interviews are now deposited in the National Sound Archives in the British Library, and are known as the ‘Millennium memory bank’. The material was also edited into 8 30-minute programmes, linked by Corin Redgrave, and broadcast on Radio 4. Each programme covers a different theme: where we live; house and home; living together; childhood; playtime; getting older; crime and the law; what’s next?
