Cassell Hospital, The

Synopsis
This Cassel Hospital offers psychiatric treatment within the National Health Service but it is unique in rejecting the medical model. No one at the Cassell receives any physical treatment, no drugs or ECT; instead there is a therapeutic community which seeks to do away with the normal authority structure - everyone takes part in decision-making including budgeting and care of the residents. The film shows therapy sessions and includes interviews with staff and patients. Methods which include having whole families resident are subject to some controversy and would not by themselves be suitable for treating a number of psychiatric conditions. The film, however, contains valuable lessons for all who work with the mentally disordered.
