Canterbury Hall and Theatre of Varieties, The
- Synopsis
- Charles Morton’s famous Canterbury Hall was a big song room - a hall attached to a tavern where eating and drinking customers were provided with a varied, mainly vocal entertainment. The music hall tradition was well established by the time the Canterbury came to prominence. What distinguished Morton’s hall from its predecessors was the single-minded ambition of its proprietor and the unusual size of the building itself. The Canterbury was a concert hall of some architectural pretension and the artistes retained there were of outstanding quality.
