CamÉra d’Afrique

Synopsis
A survey of 20 years of black African film production from Sembene Ousmane’s Senegalese fictional short BOROM SARRET (1963) to Souleumane Cissé's 1983 feature FINYE (THE WIND). Includes clips from 18 films, mainly from Francophone West Africa, including XALA, CEDDO, THE CHAPEL and FINYE and interview extracts with eight directors including Hondo, Pipa, Ganda, Balogun, Cissé and Kabore. Films from Cameroon (1975) Congo (1980), Ivory Coast (1972, 1981), Mali (1978, 1982), Mauretania (1970, 1974), Niger (1973, 1980), Nigeria (1976), Senegal (1966, 1975, 1977, 1981) and Upper Volta (1982). Raises many of the issues facing all African film makers - the lack of production finance, the dificulties of finding distribution, and the ambiguities of state aid schemes.
