Cabinet in Conflict: The Loan from the Imf
- Synopsis
- A group of eight journalists, taking the roles of Cabinet Ministers, re-create the arguments in the Cabinet in 1976 over the terms of a loan from the International Monetary Fund. In September 1976 Chancellor Denis Healy, on his way to the airport bound for the Philippines, heard that the pound had fallen to its lowest level ever. He went instead to the Labour Party Conference and announced that he would have to approach the IMF for a huge loan. That started a protracted battle within the Cabinet, a split so serious there was talk of the government collapsing.
