Breathing Deeply

Synopsis
On a rain-swept Welsh mountainside members of the 1994 British Mount Everest Medical Expedition test their physiological monitoring equipment. Having retreated to the dry, the doctors describe the physiological investigations they intend to make during their Everest Ascent. These relate to problems of altitude such as mountain sickness and the similarity of altitude-induced respiratory problems to those faced by those with lung ailments at sea level. In contrast, descending to great depths poses its own problems. Other mammals, such as whales, can dive to great depths, but humans are unique in trying to breathe while they are there. The National Hyperbaric Centre in Aberdeen provides a scientific and safety service to the North Sea oil industry. Shows preparations for a simulated dive to 450m in the centres high-pressure (hyperbaric) chambers.

Notes
NB. As of May 2016 Open University Worldwide are no longer distributing DVDs. They have posted this message on their website: ‘Unfortunately Open University Worldwide Limited has decided that product sales are no longer viable given the reduced funding to Higher Education institutions and diminishing demand for the products we have traditionally stocked. At present the Open University Students Association (OUSA) will continue to sell the "Good Study Guide", and we are in discussion with other possible distributors to continue to make The Open University’s products available for purchase. As soon as we have any information on other channels of distribution we will update this notice’. Some products are still available via second hand dealers on Amazon.co.uk
