Brave New Babies

Synopsis
Examines the claims made by Dr Brent Logan, an American psychologist, that by stimulating unborn children with rhythmic sounds played through a modified personal stereo attached to the mother’s belly, the children develop faster than their peers. Logan bases his theory on a well-established scientific founding: normally about 50% of brain cells perish before birth because they fail to connect to other cells. He believes that by stimulating the developing foetal brain, he is forcing it to become more active so more nerve connections are made and fewer cells die off before birth. But Professor Peter Hepper from Queen’s University, Belfast, while believing that foetuses are capable of sensing many things and of learning a range of sounds, is far from convinced that foetuses can become more intelligent by stimulation.
