Brain Stimulation in the Monkey: Techniques and Results

Synopsis
Materials and techniques used in construction of surface and depth electrodes and surgery for permanent implantation. Demonstrated responses include: extension of contralateral arm and contralateral rotation of the body by stimulation of area 4; coughing, gagging, and vomiting evoked by medullary stimulation; and eye movements and nystagmus by tectal area stimulation. Independence of motor cortex and hippocampus is demonstrated. More useful in illustrating methods, than as an account of the ways in which the monkey brain controls its behaviour.
