Young Offenders in the Juvenile Court

Synopsis
The practice and procedure of a juvenile court. Deals with three cases that might come before the bench for consideration. The first, an application for a certificate of unruliness in respect of a youth involved in a street fight; the second, a trio of boys with varying amounts of ‘form’ are heard on a charge of shop-lifting; and finally, a pregnant teenager is the subject of a care order. Each case is accompanied by a social enquiry report, copies of which are sent with the VTR. During the hearing there are breaks in the proceedings, to enable teaching points to be made and discussion groups to be formed, as well as the ‘natural breaks’ that happen when the magistrates retire to consider a case.
