Xiphinema Index ('Nematoda’): Feeding on Roots of Seedlings

Synopsis
Shows, partially at high magnification, characteristic events in the feeding apparatus of ‘Xiphinema index’ before and during feeding on roots of fig seedlings. Deals with probing, perforation of the cell wall and penetration by the odontostyle into deeper cell layers. Emphasis is then placed on movements within the basal oesophageal bulb-especially within the dorsal gland system-after stylet penetration, during ingestion and the short ingestion pauses. Release of saliva into the perforated cell inside the root does not become visible even under optimal optical conditions. However, events in the dorsal gland system indicate that this may happen during the phase of bulbus elongation after stylet thrusting has ceased and also during the short ingestion pauses.. Finally shows how ‘X. index’ abandons the feeding site and how the tip of the root responds to feeding.
