Writing Commentary

Synopsis
Looks at methods of writing and constructing commentary to accompany pictures. Peter McCann, a presenter of ‘Tomorrow’s World’, concentrates on the techniques of shot-listing which have to be carried out as the basis of commentary writing, then shows how to write commentary to fit exactly the shot-listed film and points out the do’s and don’ts that are important to observe. Includes two specially shot sequences at Goodwood Races, one showing how not to do it and the other, using the same basic raw material, shows how an effective commentary can be achieved. Looks at the uses of wild tracks, sound effects, graphics, and music and also includes distinguished commentary writers, among them Sir John Betjeman and Alistair Cooke.
