Writers on Writing

Synopsis
Richard Hoggart talks to contemporary writers about their work and lives. The featured writers are Edna O’Brien, Alan Sillitoe, Craig Raine and Tony Harrison. Edna O’Brien talks of Ireland, and the need to break away, of her childhood, being a woman, of the loneliness of her craft. Alan Sillitoe tells of the years before the success of ‘Saturday Night and Sunday Morning’ and his own perception of his work which is at variance with the accepted view. Craig Raine speaks of his parents, of language, religion, and his own children and their impact on him both personally and professionally. Tony Harrison explores his childhood in Leeds, his loyalty to his background and his commitment to making his way as a poet.
