Work of the Speech and Language Therapist, The

Synopsis
Shows the Paediatric Speech Therapy Unit at Leeds General Infirmary with a pre-school group, a behaviour and communication group, and an individual. Shows the approach of the speech therapist to a child with speech problems, with emphasis on play and an organised structure in treatment. The various children have different speech and language difficulties: John, 4, has problems understanding instructions; Norma, 3, is unable to construct sentences; Ryan, 7, never learned the normal rules of conversation; Elizabeth, 4, finds difficulty selecting the correct sounds for speech. There are encouraging signs of improvement as the therapist provides play and a structured approach to treatment. Discusses the differences between the skills required for speech and those for the understanding and expression of language.
